Where does my help come from?

Picture by Ken Roosenberg

As we headed from Johannesburg, South Africa towards Swaziland, the landscape and scenery began to change. We went from the very busy, hustle and bustle of the big city, a city that looked much like any large city in the United States to the barren yet mountainous terrain of Swaziland. The mountains were extremely rocky with only a green tree occasionally breaking up the rough and rocky hillsides. As I looked across the hilly, desolate landscape a familiar Bible verse that is also used in many songs popped into my head. Starting at Psalms Chapter 121 in the NIV translation it says;

A song of ascents.

1 I lift up my eyes to the hills-- where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. 3 He will not let your foot slip-- he who watches over you will not slumber; 4 indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The LORD watches over you-- the LORD is your shade at your right hand; 6 the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The LORD will keep you from all harm-- he will watch over your life; 8 the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

In a country that I knew very little about and 9,000 miles from my home, and about to undertake a vision trip experience with a lot of uncertainties, I found this scripture passage very, very comforting. It is awesome to know that we are never ever truly alone. We may feel alone at times, but God is always with us.

Thank you Lord for your steadfast love. Even when we continually fall short of your expectations, you do not abandon us. You patiently wait for us to get it together and get our life back on track. You are the awesome God!
